What is phishing and what does it mean?


 

Phishing (pronounced 'fishing') is a new term in the computer world.

As per Webster's New Millennium™ Dictionary of English, phishing is defined as:

(n) The practice of luring unsuspecting Internet users to a fake Web site by using authentic-looking email with the real organization's logo, in an attempt to steal passwords, financial or personal information, or introduce a virus attack; the creation of a Web site replica for fooling unsuspecting Internet users into submitting personal or financial information or passwords

Basically it means that it's a way for hackers and spammers to get your information, or "fish" for it, without you knowing. As stated, they create fake website that look real with real company logos to get your information. New web browsers now have built in phishing filters, which will alert you of a potential fake website. (see the example below)
